WMO COORDINATION AND CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS FOR LDCS IN AFRICA,
10 – 12 SEPTEMBER 2007

1.      DATES OF MEETINGS

 

 The WMO Coordination and Capacity Building Workshop for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Africa will be held at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel, Entebbe Uganda on 10 and 11 September 2007.

 

The WMO Capacity Building Workshop on Management fo rhte Heads of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) of the LDCs in Africa will be held at the same venue on 12 September 2007.

 

2.      ENTRY FORMALITIES

 

Delegates who will require entry visas may get them from the Uganda diplomatic missions in Abuja, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, Geneva, Khartoum, Kigali, Kinshasa, London and Nairobi.

 

In exceptional cases visas may be issued on arrival at Entebbe International Airport to delegates who are unable to obtain them in their home country or one of the countries listed above. In this regard, all the relevant information regarding passport and travel details should be sent in advance to the Permanent Representative of Uganda with WMO, before visas can be processed. The PR will then arrange for a letter to be sent to the applicant stating that a visa will be provided on arrival at Entebbe International Airport. It should be noted that many airliners may not allow passengers to board an aircraft without the appropriate entry visa or letter from the host country.

 

Attention is drawn to the WHO Health Advisory list below:

 

Yellow Fever A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers coming from endemic countries.

 

Cholera A cholera vaccination certificate is required for travelers.

 

Malaria There is malaria risk in the country. You are advised to take anti-malaria treatment prior to arrival. All the hotels provide treated mosquito nets.

 
 
 
 

3.      TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS ON ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

 

The Department of Meteorology will meet all delegates who have sent their itinerary in advance at the airport. They will also provide the return transport to the airport.

 

4.      ACCOMODATION

 

All delegates are advised to book and stay in Imperial Botanical Beach, Entebbe. A special rate has been negotiated for the rooms (bed and breakfast) at 65US$. Each delegate will pay for his or her own accommodation. You can book online to:

There are some other Hotels in Entebbe, however, please note that in case you are staying in any other hotel other than Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel, you may have to make your own arrangements to and from the venue and the airport.

 

5.      TELECOMMUNICATION/POSTAL SERVICES

 

There will be limited facilities at the hotel and designated venue.

 

a)      Internet Services will be accessible to the delegates during the conference. However Internet facilities will also be available in the rooms at a cost.

b)      Telephone and Fascimile Services will be available at a cost for national and international calls at the hotel.

 

6.      GENERAL INFORMATION

 

a)     Banking Services and Currency

 

Banking hours are from 08.30 –1600 hours on weekdays. Some banks open on Saturday from 09.00 to 13.00 hours.

 

Major credit cards are accepted at the hotel.

 

Most internationally recognised currencies and Travellers’ cheques can be exchanged at the hotel and Entebbe International Airport.

 

The national currency of Uganda is the Uganda Shilling. The approximate exchange rate in July 2007 is US$ 1= Ug. Shs. 1,685, UK Pounds =Ug. Shs. 3,300 and Euro 1 = Ug. Shs. 2,200.

 

b)     Climate and Clothing

 

The climate in Uganda is modified equatorial.

September is usually the onset of the second rainy season and Entebbe being on the shores of Lake Victoria gets it’s rain in the morning.

 

Summer clothes are highly recommended but a light jacket and shawl may be needed in the evenings and on rainy days.

 

c)      Time

 
Uganda time is GMT + 3 hours.
 

d)     Electricity Supply

 

The power is 240 volts, AC, 50 Hz. Electrical sockets are British –type square with three pins.

 

e)     Business and Shopping Hours

 

Government offices open between 08.00-12.45 hours and 14.00-17.00 hours Monday to Friday.

 

Shops open from 09.00-18.00 hours Monday to Saturday. Sunday is a resting day.
