Mauritius International Meeting, Port Louis, Mauritius, 10-14 January 2005
The Mauritius International Meeting was the ten-year review of the Barbados Programme of Action. Though its outcome document was the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of SIDS, the BPOA was still hailed as the “blueprint providing the fundamental framework for the sustainable development of Small Island developing States.” At the same time, the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the international community “to the principles of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, Agenda 21, the (Johannesburg) Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (JPOI), and the outcomes of other relevant major United Nations conferences and summits which contribute to the sustainable development of SIDS.” The Mauritius International Meeting also took into account what was termed as “new and emerging issues” that affected the SIDS during the decade after Barbados, and not foreseen at that first SIDS conference. These issues related to matters of graduation criteria of the United Nations of SIDS Least Developed Countries, trade issues, HIV/AIDS and culture.
Presently, the United Nations and the international community, and the SIDS in particular, are pursuing the implementation of the MSI.
