Dr. Melchior Mataki is a specialist in environment and waste management issues. He assumed his current position as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment in 2013. He also serves as the Solomon Islands National Disaster Council Chair. Prior to this, Dr Mataki worked with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) as team leader of a climate change adaptation programme piloted in Choiseul Province.

Mr. Mataki has an undergraduate degree in chemistry and mathematics, and a research-based Masters in analytical chemistry from the University of the South Pacific (USP), Fiji. After teaching at USP from 2003-2008, he joined as the Programme Manager and Fellow at the Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development at USP, where he was involved in applied and policy research work on waste management, climate change and natural resource management. He also holds a PhD from Murdoch Unversity in Australia.
